What Mastodon does
Mastodon is a federated social networking server that lets users post short updates and follow accounts across independently run servers using the ActivityPub protocol. Communities and organizations run their own instance to control moderation and data instead of relying on a centralized platform. Because it speaks ActivityPub, accounts on a self-hosted instance can follow and be followed by users on entirely separate servers.
