What Prometheus does
Prometheus scrapes and stores time-series metrics from applications and infrastructure, with a query language for analysis and built-in alerting rules. It's the most common metrics backend paired with Grafana for dashboards in self-hosted monitoring stacks. Its pull-based model means it scrapes metrics from targets directly, rather than requiring every app to push data to it.
