What OpenVPN does
OpenVPN creates encrypted tunnels for secure remote access or site-to-site connectivity, with broad client support across desktop, mobile, and router firmware. It remains a common choice where WireGuard's newer client ecosystem isn't yet fully supported. Its configuration format is also well documented and supported by most consumer router firmware and mobile clients.
