What MariaDB does
MariaDB is a fork of MySQL maintained as a fully open community project, offering the same SQL interface with additional storage engines and performance features. It's a common default on Linux distributions and cPanel-style hosting as a MySQL-compatible database. It aims to stay a fully open community project, in contrast to Oracle's stewardship of MySQL itself.
